International Youth Day? There are more than a billion young people in the world. Many lack basic rights such as freedom or equal opportunities, and often face problems such as poverty, war or the inability to access education. However, they are the most capable to undertake a flight forward and fight for a better world. Their hope and open-mindedness are vital to face a change that makes the world a more tolerant, peaceful and equitable place for all its inhabitants. For these reasons, on December 19, 1999, in response to the recommendation of the World Conference of Ministers of Youth Affairs that had been held in 1998, the UN General Assembly declared August 12 as the International Day of Youth.
The UN considers young people whose ages are between 15 and 24 years of age. This group currently represents 18% of the world’s population. According to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, the international community must work to expand its field of opportunities and meet its demands for dignity, development and decent work, as it considers that “Not investing in our youth is a deceptive saving “
Youth, with their imagination, ideals and energy, is a determining factor in the socioeconomic development and progress of nations . The young are the future. And precisely for this reason, policies and programs must be implemented that combat the main problems that affect them, such as inequality in access to education, work stoppages and contagious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis or AIDS.
As a teacher, if you want to celebrate International Youth Day, you can do it by contributing to raising awareness among your students about the main problems that concern them and providing information about the organizations that watch over their protection, such as Injuve, Youth Institute in Spain , or the European Commission for Youth . You can also encourage them to change the world through their participation in programs such as the European Youth in Action , or through websites like La juventud opina , managed by UNICEF.
