When I learned about the new Apple iMac I noticed something curious, and it is difficult to find a website that analyzes the news with some rigor; is more, in some web of quite prestige or traffic, I have seen how it was lacking to the truth while hundreds of comments discussed the news without rectifying the deception. If we want something more “muscle” we can choose another Intel i5, specifically an Intel Core i5 5575R of four cores at 2.8 GHz (Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz), also with 14nm Broadwell architecture, 4 megabytes L3 cache and an Intel 6200 GPU (48 runtime drives, 128 MB of eDRAM memory), Intel’s most powerful integrated to date, able to stand up and beat an AMD apu like the 7870K, all this with a 65p tdp. This is the system of New Apple Imac.
-If on the contrary we want to make the leap to 4K, Apple allows us to choose an Intel i5 5675R processor, which raises its operating frequency up to 3.1 GHz with a Turbo Boost of up to 3.6 GHz . We can even choose an i7 from the Broadwell range, specifically an i7 5775R, with an operating frequency between 3.3 and 3.8 GHz , 4 cores and 8 processing threads. Both cpu also make use of the Iris Pro 6200.
)Regarding the storage section , the variety of configurations will not be a problem, since we can choose between a “simple” mechanical disk of 5400 rpm and 1 TB of capacity, a hybrid disk that Apple calls “Fusion Drive” ( the most used files are saved in the flash memory and the rest in the hard disk) with 1 TB of capacity and 24GB of flash memory or a third option in SSD format of up to 256 GB. And finally, if we choose the model with 4K screen, we can install a “Fusion drive” of 2 TB and an SSD unit of up to 512 GB capacity.
The iMac prices of 21.5 inches are 1279, 1529 and 1729 euros for the 3 basic models (1TB mechanical disk and micro series). This is the system of New Apple Imac.
The 27-inch iMac comes with 5K screen for all models and Skylake cpus up to 4 Ghz.
If you have a pocket that is loose enough to buy a 27-inch iMac, you’ll see how all the models now reach the market with a 5K (5,220 by 2,880 pixels) 5-inch “retina” screen with IPS technology , which was optional in the previous generation.

This cpu incorporates 4 cores, 8 process threads and 8 MB of L3 cache. In this case the storage options leave aside the “normal” mechanical disks and start from a hybrid “Fusion drive” of 1 TB , which can also be 3 TB . If we choose an SSD unit, this can be 256, 512 or even 1TB in PCIe format with a sequential reading of up to 1,800 Mb / s. The GPU will be an AMD Radeon R9 M390 with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory.
If we choose the most expensive model, we will have an Intel i5 6600 CPUwith a frequency that ranges between 3.3 and 3.9 GHz . We can also install the i 7 6700K 4 GHz. In the graphic terrain we can choose between an AMD Radeon R9 M395 with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory or an AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory. In this case we can choose a unit ” Fusion drive” between 2 or 3 TB or an SSD unit of 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB capacity.
The 3 iMac of 27 inches have base prices of 2129, 2329 and 2629 dollars respectively. This is the system of New Apple Imac.
At this point, we would like to make a couple of observations:
-The first is relative to the cpus that are available. And while the processors that can mount the new 21.5-inch iMac are Broadwell BGA 1364 format and are soldered to the board, the Skylake processors that mount the 27-inch iMac are in LGA format for socket 1151, and so They can both be replaced by each other. This offers the buyer the opportunity to buy the most basic model, without having to pay for more expensive storage options, and in the future, buy on their own a more powerful processor without paying the extra price that the more expensive models entail (although the terms of the guarantee should be studied).
Speaking also about the processors, it is curious to note that the most powerful microprocessor that can be mounted, and although Apple does not mention it on its website (since it only mentions the frequencies and we had to find what model was in each case), it is a 6700K i7 (unless you have used a blocked CPU and overclocked it by increasing its base frequency, which is unlikely). What does this mean? Well, unless Apple has intentionally blocked the BIOS, these iMac should be able to overclock them using a multiplier, within the limited cooling options that the machine has. Considering that a motherboard manufactured “ad hoc” is used for the iMac, this block will be most likely. Even so, it is still an interesting fact. This is the system of New Apple Imac.
– The second observation is relative to the RAM section, since all the iMac have 8 GB of DDR3 @ 1866 MHz memory, expandable to 16 GB in the case of the 21.5 inch models, and up to 32 GB in the case of the 27-inch iMac. The issue is that while the Broadwell platform (series 5000) makes use of DDR3 memory, and can officially support DDR3L memory of up to 1866 megahertz @ 1.5 volts , Skylake has a “mixed” memory controller designed to ease the transition between DDR3 memory and the DDR4 memory, that is, that supports both generations of memory.
The most controversial is that Apple has decided to use exactly the same DDR @ 1866 megahertz memory for the 27-inch iMac, instead of benefiting from the new DDR4 memory. Leaving aside the fact that the consumption could have been reduced using DDR4 memory, what alarms us in a way is that the Skylake memory controller supports this: DDR4-1866 / 2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V . That is, while it has no problem to work with a DDR4 memory at 1866 megahertz, its official support under DDR3 memory remains at 1600 megahertz.
In summary, Apple has used a DDR3 memory that goes out of Skylake’s memory controller specifications. It should not be a problem as long as the fixed 1.35v is not exceeded as the recommended limit for the memory controller, which leads us to conclude that, unless Apple has mounted a DDR3 memory capable of operating at 1866 megahertz with a voltage of 1.35 volts , will be forcing the memory controller of the microprocessor, and this could be damaged . If we take into account that recently came to light a statement in which Intel itself recognized that the DDR3 memory could damage the memory controller Skylake, the thing gets pretty intriguing at least. Update: We have known that, at least in the 21.5-inch iMacs, the DDR3L SO-DIMM memory used is soldered to the motherboard (and manufactured by Samsung), so it is advisable to think very carefully about the memory needs that it will have. our future iMac, because then we will not be able to make an extension of it, and it is a pity that after disbursing a considerable amount of money, the performance of our new iMac will not be as expected. A pretty ugly move by Apple, which limits the possibilities of expansion to force us to pay a premium price for that greater amount of RAM.
